Huge thank you to my friend @spillzz for bringing me his treasured hoodie and trusting me with bringing it back to life! Truly one of my favorite parts of my clothing creation is finding garments that are falling apart but hold special meaning to friends who want to keep the love alive and not trash the garment and move on to another one.
Countering the fast fashion culture and embracing a more sustainable, circular way of being is at the core of the MikeyJProductions project, so this hoodie really spoke to my creative soul!
For this piece, I took the original @dailybreadmusic hoodie that unfortunately was coming apart after years of love, chopped it up, and used its core pieces to make something new. After removing the viable pieces, I set out to make a new base. I acid washed a black crew neck, threw on the main patches on the front and back, added the hood and front pocket, and frankenstined one of the arms. I kept the new cuff for this cool patchwork vibe, and threw it all together.
This was the first time I’ve ever fully removed parts of one garment and added it to another, and all I can say is it was a transformative experience. I have felt so nervous to try something like that for fear of falling short of perfection - but recently I’ve been leaning more into embracing the imperfections and reminding myself that being human is about creating in the absence of perfectionism. And in the pursuit of creation just for the love of the game, I’ve found myself doing things I never dreamed I’d be able to.
I think it’s much more fun to share my most authentic selve in a vulnerable fashion than to sit on a pile of content that I hide from the world because “it’s not perfect”. This shit is perfect exactly the way it is. I fux w it heavy. And I hope you do too :)
