New patch jacket to replace a friends favorite one that was lost to a house fire a few weeks back ❤️🔥
After the fire, Kyle’s friends all got together to ship me a collection of patches (both old and new) so that I could recreate his favorite jacket. Shoutout to the most wonderful @breezy_moonbaby for coming up with the idea and bringing all of us beautiful people together to support our friend.
In between my work, roadtripping out to see Pretty Lights @ Buena Vista, and then hitting the road to make it to the Gorge, I was able to piece back together the jacket and get her all sewn up and ready to surprise Kyle. That was a moment where I felt like I really embodied that crazy artist vibe I’ve always romanticized in my head. Hell yeah.
Besides for this whole thing being one of the most stunning displays of friendship and community that I’ve seen in a long time, this project was able to remind me of something else, too. And this came to me during the process of sewing the patches on: as when each stitching was done, I would snip off the excess thread, and burn the very last tiny little bit to cauterize and seal the patch on.
I thought to myself, “how ironic that the same element (fire) that took Kyle’s house, is also the one that remakes what it originally stole from him.” The same fire that destroyed, was also part of the recreation. What a beautiful little metaphor for life. To me, it is a reminder that life is what you make it.
Such a beautiful piece, I won’t forget ever about this one 🧡
